Find and replace

Replace many words or phrases at once. Supports regular expressions and shows how many were replaced.

Original text

0 characters · 0 lines

Replace rules

0 characters · 0 lines

Everything runs on this device. What you enter is never sent anywhere.

Rules are applied from top to bottom. Even with Regex off, \n means a line break and \t a tab (type \\n to find “\n” itself). Your rules and settings are kept on this device for next time, but the text you enter is not.

How to use

  1. 1. Enter your text

Tap “Paste” above “Original text” to put in the text you copied. You can also long-press the box to paste, or open a text file with “Open file”.

  2. 2. Write the replace rules

Below the text box, type the text to change in “Find” and the new text in “Replace with”. Tap “Add rule” for another pair. Text is replaced as you type, and the number of matches appears under each rule. Open “Presets & bulk input” to add common rules or paste two columns from Excel.

  3. 3. Replace with regular expressions

Tap “Regex” under the rules to turn it on, then tap “Add rule” and enter a regular expression like “(\d+)/(\d+)/(\d+)” in the new box. In “Replace with”, “$1” stands for the text inside the first parentheses. It's an easy way to change the format of dates and more all at once.

  4. 4. Copy or save

Tap “Copy” below the result to copy the changed text. Tap “Download text” to save it as a file.

Great for

  • Making spelling consistent

Fix mixed spellings like “e-mail” and “email” or “color” and “colour” in one go, with as many rules as you need.

    Writers, editors and PR staff

  • Swapping in new names or dates

Update the company name, dates and venue in last year's notice or a template all at once, and reuse it.

    Office and admin staff

  • Changing data formats in bulk

With regular expressions, you can turn “2026/11/14” into “11/14/2026” or commas into line breaks, all in one step.

    Data handlers and engineers

  • Counting how many there are

Before anything is replaced, the number of matches appears under each rule. You'll also see right away when nothing is found. Replaced parts are highlighted in the result.

    Anyone checking a text

Good to know

  • Rules are applied from top to bottom. To swap two words, like “A→B” and “B→A”, go through a placeholder in between (“A→★”, “B→A”, “★→B”).
  • Word and PDF files can't be opened as they are. Copy the text inside and paste it in. Text color and bold aren't kept.
  • You can't review and replace matches one at a time. Replaced parts are highlighted in the result, so you can check them there. To compare with the original side by side, use Text compare.

About find and replace

Find and replace swaps every occurrence of a piece of text for something else in one go. In this tool, you line up as many pairs of “Find” and “Replace with” (rules) as you like, and they're applied from top to bottom all at once. There's no need to run your editor's Replace over and over, and since the rules stay on your device, it's handy when you make the same fixes again and again.

Turn on “Regex” to search for patterns instead of fixed text, such as “a run of digits” or “the start of a line”. Parts wrapped in parentheses can be used as $1, $2 in “Replace with”, so you can rearrange text too, like changing how dates are written or swapping first and last names. Regular expressions use JavaScript syntax, and ^ and $ match at each line.

FAQ

Answers to common questions before you start.

Is my text sent anywhere?

No. All the replacing happens in your device's browser, and nothing you enter is sent to a server or saved. You can safely use it on confidential documents or text with personal information.

How many rules can I add?

Up to 200. Rules are applied from top to bottom, and each rule works on the result of the rules before it. Use the arrows under a rule to change the order.

Are my rules saved?

Your rules and settings such as “Regex” are kept in this device's browser for the next time you open the page (they're never sent to a server). The text you enter isn't kept. To remove a rule you don't need, click the × next to it. To pause a rule without deleting it, press the check box on its left.

How do I delete text?

Leave “Replace with” empty, and whatever matches “Find” is removed.

Can I replace or add line breaks?

Yes. Type \n in “Find” to match a line break and \t to match a tab (this works with Regex on or off). In “Replace with”, \n adds a line break and \t adds a tab. To find the characters “\n” themselves, type \\n.

Can I add many rules at once from Excel?

Yes. Open “Presets & bulk input”, copy two columns (find, replace with) from Excel or a spreadsheet, paste them and press “Apply”. Comma-separated CSV (like e-mail,email) works too. “Copy rules” copies your current rules in the same format, so you can paste them back into a sheet.

What does $1 mean in a regular expression?

It's the text matched by the part of “Find” wrapped in parentheses ( ). For example, replacing (\d+)/(\d+) with $2/$1 turns “11/14” into “14/11”. $& is the whole match.

Can I search for regex symbols as plain characters?

When “Regex” is off, ., * and ( are all searched for as plain characters. When it's on, put a \ in front, like \. or \(.

Are look-alike characters treated as different?

Yes. Curly quotes (“ ”) and straight quotes ("), or full-width letters (ABC) and regular ones (ABC), are treated as different characters. To straighten quotes, add “Straight quotes” from “Presets & bulk input”.

Does it work on my phone?

Yes. On phones, the text box, rules and result are stacked from top to bottom. Tap “Copy” to paste the result straight into another app.

Is it free?

Yes, it's free. No sign-up and no ads.
