Good to know

  • Public holidays aren’t shown. They vary by country and region, so check your local calendar.
  • Dates before October 1582 use the current calendar extended backward. Many countries switched from the Julian calendar even later (Britain and its colonies in 1752, Russia in 1918), so historical records there may give a different weekday.
  • “Today” comes from your device’s clock. If your device’s date is off, “From today” will be off too.

How the day of the week works

Weekdays repeat every 7 days, so a date’s weekday depends on the remainder when its distance from a known day is divided by 7. A year of 365 days is 52 weeks plus 1 day, so the same date moves one weekday later each year — or two when the year crosses a leap day (February 29). This tool counts days from the year, month and day, so it works the same way for any date from year 1 to 9999.

The current (Gregorian) calendar began in October 1582. Weekdays for earlier dates are found by extending it backward (as spreadsheets and most websites do). Week numbers follow ISO 8601: weeks start on Monday, and week 1 is the week containing the year’s first Thursday.

FAQ

Common questions about looking up the day of the week.

Is the date I enter sent anywhere?

No. Everything is calculated in your browser on your device, and the dates you pick are never sent to a server.

How do I find out what day I was born?

Just pick your date of birth in the “Date” field. “Day of the week” in “Result” shows the day you were born. Further down, “Calendar & other years” shows which day your birthday falls on in the coming years.

How far back or ahead can I look?

From January 1 of year 1 to December 31, 9999. For dates before October 1582, the current (Gregorian) calendar is extended backward.

Will old dates match historical records?

Not always. Many countries kept using the Julian calendar after 1582 — Britain and its colonies until 1752, Russia until 1918 — so a date written in records from those times may not match the date and weekday shown here.

How is something like “4th Saturday” counted?

It’s which occurrence of that weekday it is, counting from the 1st of the month: days 1–7 are the 1st, 8–14 the 2nd, 15–21 the 3rd, 22–28 the 4th and 29–31 the 5th.

Which week numbering is used?

The international standard ISO 8601. Weeks start on Monday, and week 1 is the week containing the year’s first Thursday. So January 1 can fall in week 53 of the previous year, and late December can be week 1 of the next year. It’s also shown below the result in the form “2026-W43”.

Does it show public holidays?

No. Holidays differ by country and region and can change, so please check an official calendar for where you live.

How is “From today” counted?

It’s the number of days from today’s date on your device to the date you picked. It reads “today” for today, “tomorrow” for the next day, “in 3 days” for future dates and “3 days ago” for past ones.

Which day does the calendar week start on?

It follows the language of the page. Weeks start on Sunday in Japanese, English, Korean, Chinese and Portuguese, on Monday in German, French, Spanish and Russian, and on Saturday in Arabic.
