Everything is calculated on this device. The numbers you enter are never sent anywhere.

In Japan, the reduced 8% rate applies to food and non-alcoholic drinks (except eating out) and newspaper subscriptions.

Rounding is applied to the tax amount. For invoices or tax returns, follow the rounding rule your store or business partner uses.

How to use

Good to know before you start

  • It calculates one amount at a time. For a receipt that mixes 10% and 8% items, add up the amounts for each rate first and enter them separately.
  • This tool doesn’t decide which items qualify for the reduced 8% rate. If you’re unsure, check the guidance from Japan’s National Tax Agency.
  • For invoices and tax returns, use the rounding rule agreed with your business partner or tax accountant.

How the tax is calculated

From a pre-tax amount, the tax is the price before tax × the rate. The tax is rounded, then added to the price before tax. From a tax-included amount, the tax is the total × 10/110 (8/108 for 8%). The tax is rounded, and what’s left after subtracting it from the total is the price before tax.

In Japan, the law doesn’t say whether to round down, round off or round up — each store or business can choose, and rounding down is the most common. On qualified invoices under Japan’s invoice system, the tax is rounded only once per rate on each invoice.

FAQ

Answers to the things people most often wonder about when calculating tax.

Are the amounts I enter sent anywhere?

No. All calculations happen in the browser on your device, and the numbers you enter are never sent to a server.

How do you work out the price before tax from a tax-included amount?

First the tax is calculated as the total × 10/110 (8/108 for 8%) and rounded with the method you chose. The price before tax is the total minus that tax.

Why is the result 1 yen off from “total ÷ 1.1”?

It depends on which number gets rounded. With “Round to” set to “Whole units”, take a total of 1,000 yen: 1,000 ÷ 1.1 = 909.09…, so rounding the price before tax down gives 909 yen (tax 91 yen). This tool rounds down the tax of 90.90… yen instead, giving a tax of 90 yen and a price before tax of 910 yen. With “Round off” or “Round up”, you get 909 yen.

Should I round down, round off or round up?

In Japan, the law leaves it up to each store or business, and rounding down is the most common. When dealing with a business partner, using the same method as their invoices makes the amounts more likely to match.

What does the reduced 8% rate apply to?

In Japan, it applies to food and drinks other than alcohol and eating out, and to newspaper subscriptions published at least twice a week. The same food is 8% for takeout or delivery, but 10% if you eat it in the store.

How do I calculate a receipt that mixes 10% and 8%?

Add up the amounts for each rate first, then enter and calculate each one separately. This tool calculates one amount at one rate.

Can I calculate the tax for a qualified invoice?

Yes. Under Japan’s invoice system, the tax is rounded only once per rate on each invoice. Enter the total for each rate, and you’ll get the tax calculated that way.

Can I use rates other than 10% and 8%?

Yes. Click “Other rate” to enter any rate from 0 to 100%, up to three decimal places. You can use it as a VAT or sales tax calculator for other countries, or for Japan’s old 5% rate.

Can I enter amounts like “1,000” or “$1,000”?

Yes. Thousands separators and currency symbols such as $, €, £ and ¥ are fine — the amount is calculated as is.

What does copying give me?

The button next to each result copies the number without thousands separators (like “1833.33”), so you can paste it straight into a spreadsheet or a form on another site. “Copy all results” copies one line per result, like “Before tax: 1,833.33”.

What does “Round to” do?

It sets the smallest unit the tax is rounded to. Choose “Whole units” for currencies without cents, such as the Japanese yen, and “0.01” for currencies like the euro or the dollar.

Is it free?

Yes. No sign-up, and no ads.
