When it helps

  • Send to Windows or Android users

HEIC photos may not open on Windows or Android. JPG opens as-is on any computer or phone.

    People who send iPhone photos

  • Submit to forms that only take JPG

Many applications, job forms and official sites still don't accept HEIC. Convert to JPG and submit as-is.

    Anyone filling in applications

  • Get photos printed

Most photo printing services and kiosks accept JPG. Use it when HEIC is turned down.

    People who print photos

  • List items on marketplaces and shops

Listing pages and shop dashboards may not support HEIC. JPG works with almost every service.

    People who post product photos

When JPG isn't the best choice

  • To edit or keep photos without losing quality, use Convert HEIC to PNG. JPG loses a little quality every time it's saved.
  • If you only put photos on the web, Convert HEIC to WebP makes lighter files.
  • If you only use the photos on iPhone or Mac, HEIC is fine as it is.

About HEIC

HEIC (HEIF) is the format iPhone uses to save photos by default. It stores photos at roughly half the size of a JPEG of similar quality.

But many places can't open or won't accept HEIC, such as Windows, many web services and application forms. As JPG, photos open almost anywhere and can be submitted anywhere.

FAQ

Answers to the things people most often wonder about before converting.

Are my photos sent anywhere?

No. Everything is converted inside your browser on your own device. Your photos are never uploaded to a server.

What is HEIC?

It's the format iPhone uses to save photos by default, also called HEIF. It's smaller than JPEG, but some environments, such as Chrome and Windows, can't open it directly.

How can I tell if my iPhone photos are HEIC?

If the file ends in .heic, it's HEIC. On iPhone, go to Settings → Camera → Formats: “High Efficiency” saves HEIC, and “Most Compatible” saves JPEG.

What quality should I choose?

It starts at 85, where photos look almost no different. To make files even smaller, try going down to around 70. For images with text, a higher setting of 90 or more works better.

The file got bigger after converting.

HEIC stores photos more efficiently than JPG, so at similar quality the JPG is usually bigger. To make it smaller, try lowering the quality to around 70.

What happens to transparent areas?

JPG can't be transparent, so they're filled with white. To keep transparency, convert to PNG or WebP instead.

Can I convert Live Photos?

The still image is converted. The moving part (video) isn't.

Why does converting take a while?

Browsers other than Safari can't read HEIC on their own, so a HEIC reader program is used. It can take a few seconds per photo, and the first time also loads the program (about 3 MB). The program is part of this site, and your photos are never sent anywhere.

What happens to photo info like location (Exif)?

It isn't included in the converted image, so this is also handy for removing location data before sharing. The photo's orientation is applied correctly.

Is it free?

Yes. No sign-up, and no ads.
