Good to know before you start
- A QR code can’t be edited after it’s made. If the URL changes, make a new one. Scans can’t be counted either.
- Codes with a photo, an icon or new colors can be harder to scan depending on how they’re used. Test with a phone camera before printing.
- To make the saved PNG lighter, try Compress images.
About QR codes and error correction
QR codes carry spare data, called error correction, so they can still be read when part of them is dirty or covered. That’s why a code still scans with an icon in the middle or a photo underneath. This tool switches to the strongest level, H, when you add an icon or photo, and test-scans the finished code for you.
The QR codes made here contain your URL or text directly. They aren’t “redirect” codes that go through another service, so they never expire and keep working even if a service shuts down.
FAQ
Answers to common questions before you start.
Is what I enter, or my image, sent anywhere?
No. The QR code is made in your browser on your device. Your URL, text and images are never uploaded to a server.
Do the QR codes expire?
No. Your content is stored in the code itself and doesn’t pass through this site, so the code keeps working even if this site goes away.
Can I see how many times it was scanned?
No. Counting scans would require routing every scan through another server. In return, no information about the people scanning is sent anywhere.
Will it scan with an icon or photo?
It’s designed to. Adding an icon or photo sets error correction to H, and the finished code is test-scanned on the page. If it can’t be read, you’ll see “This design may not scan.”
It says the design may not scan.
Try darker dots, a lighter background, a smaller icon, or “Subtle” photo visibility. Shorter content also helps, because the modules get bigger.
Should I save as PNG or SVG?
PNG suits documents, social media and websites; SVG suits print and design software, and stays sharp at any size. PNG can be 512, 1024 or 2048 px.
How does a Wi-Fi QR code work?
Scan it with the camera on an iPhone or Android phone and tap the prompt to join — no password typing needed. Anyone who can see the code can join, so choose where you post it carefully.
The Wi-Fi QR code scans but won't connect. What should I check?
Make sure the Network name (SSID) and password match your router exactly, including upper and lower case. Check that Security matches the router's setting, and turn on Hidden network if your network doesn't broadcast its name. If you change the password later, make a new QR code.
Can I use any colors?
Dark dots on a light background almost always scan. You’ll get a warning if the colors are too close or the dots are lighter than the background. Put transparent codes on a light background.
Can I use it for products and flyers?
Yes. The QR code standard is open for anyone to use, and the codes you make can go on flyers, packaging and more. “QR Code” is a registered trademark of DENSO WAVE INCORPORATED.
Is it free?
Yes. No sign-up, no ads, and no limit on how many codes you make.
