How to use

  1. 1. Choose length and characters

Below the passwords, drag the “Length” slider or type a number in the box next to it to set the number of characters. Use the buttons under “Characters” to choose whether to include uppercase, lowercase, numbers and symbols. The passwords above are remade as soon as you change anything.

  2. 2. Match the symbols to the site

If a site only accepts certain symbols, delete the ones it doesn't allow in the “Symbols to use” box. If you'll write the password on paper, turn on “Avoid look-alike characters”. Check “Strength” above to see if it's strong enough.

  3. 3. Copy a password

Tap the copy icon to the right of a password to copy just that one. If you don't like any of them, tap “Regenerate”. Tap “Copy all” to copy the whole list at once.

Great for

  • Signing up for a new account

Make a different password for each site in seconds, so you never reuse the same one.

Anyone who uses lots of online services

  • Meeting a site's password rules

Fit rules like “8–20 characters” or “only !#$ allowed” by setting the length and symbols. Every kind you turn on among uppercase, numbers and symbols is always included at least once.

People whose password keeps getting rejected

  • Handing a password over on paper

Turn on “Avoid look-alike characters” and nobody will mix up 0 and O or 1 and l. Good for Wi-Fi passwords and first-time logins.

Office or shop admins, and whoever sets up the family's phones

  • Making many at once

Make up to 20 at a time and copy them all together. Useful for test accounts or initial passwords to hand out.

    Developers and IT staff

Good to know

  • Generated passwords aren't saved. Before closing the page, save them in a password manager or similar.
  • The strength rating is calculated from which characters are used and how many. Reusing or leaking a password makes it unsafe, however strong it is.
  • It can't make passphrases of easy-to-remember words. It makes passwords of randomly arranged characters.

How to make a strong password

A password's strength depends on how many different characters it can use and how long it is. For example, picking 16 characters from the 62 uppercase letters, lowercase letters and numbers gives about 4.8×10²⁸ combinations, far too many to guess by brute force. Making a password longer raises its strength much more than adding kinds of characters.

This tool uses only the browser's built-in cryptographic random numbers (crypto.getRandomValues), and every character has the same chance of being picked. Unlike passwords people think up, they never contain birthdays, words or keyboard patterns. The passwords are only shown on screen; they're never sent or saved.

FAQ

Answers to common questions before you start.

Are the passwords sent anywhere?

No. Passwords are made only inside the browser on your device. They're never sent to a server or recorded. Once the page has loaded, it works even offline.

Are they really random?

Yes. It uses the browser's built-in cryptographic random numbers (crypto.getRandomValues), so every character has the same chance of being picked. It doesn't use predictable random numbers (Math.random).

How long should my password be?

12 characters or more for everyday accounts, and 16 or more for important ones like email, banking or your password manager. If a site has a maximum length, using the maximum is the safest choice.

A site says some symbols aren't allowed.

Delete the symbols that site doesn't allow in the “Symbols to use” box. If the site allows no symbols at all, turn off “Symbols”. Either way, new passwords are made right away.

Does it meet rules like “must include an uppercase letter, a number and a symbol”?

Yes. Every password always includes at least one character of each kind you turn on.

What does “Avoid look-alike characters” leave out?

The number 0, uppercase O and lowercase o; the number 1, lowercase l and uppercase I; the vertical bar |; and the quote marks `'". Since this leaves fewer characters to choose from, add one or two characters to the length if you're concerned.

How is the strength rating decided?

It calculates how many possible passwords there are (in bits) from the number of usable characters and the length. Under 45 bits is “Weak”, under 64 bits “Fair”, under 90 bits “Strong”, and anything above that “Very strong”.

Are the passwords saved?

No. They disappear when you close the page or regenerate. Save the password you use in a password manager or your browser's saved passwords.

How many can I make at once?

Choose 1, 5, 10 or 20. Click “Copy all” to copy them all at once, one per line.

Is it free?

Yes, it's free. No sign-up and no ads.
