ZIPs with garbled file names
ZIPs made on Windows with Japanese, Chinese or other non-Latin names are listed correctly. If they still look wrong, you can pick another encoding.

Good to know before you start
- Formats other than ZIP, such as RAR, 7z and LZH, and split ZIPs (.z01 and so on) can't be opened.
- A ZIP whose password you've forgotten can't be opened (and the password can't be recovered). Ask the person who sent it.
- Very large ZIPs of several GB may not open on a phone because there isn't enough memory. Open those on a computer.
Why file names get garbled
ZIP files have no fixed rule for which character encoding the file names use. ZIPs made with the built-in feature of Japanese Windows usually use Shift_JIS, while ZIPs made on a Mac or iPhone usually use UTF-8. When the receiving device reads them with a different encoding, the names turn into garbage characters.
This tool picks the encoding automatically, from the flag in the ZIP and the pattern of the names. If they still look wrong, change “File name encoding” above the list and the names are read again right away. Hidden files that a Mac adds, such as “__MACOSX”, aren't listed.
FAQ
Answers to common questions before you start.
Are my files or password sent anywhere?
No. The ZIP is opened only inside the browser on your device. Neither its contents nor the password you type are uploaded to a server.
Why won't my iPhone open a password-protected ZIP?
The Files app on iPhone sometimes can't open password-protected ZIPs. Open this page in Safari and you can view and save what's inside without installing an app.
Can it open AES-encrypted ZIPs?
Yes. It supports password-protected ZIPs using the classic ZipCrypto and the more secure AES (128, 192 and 256-bit). You don't need to pick the method.
It says “Wrong password”
Check upper and lower case and any spaces at the start or end. Copying from an email sometimes brings along a space or line break. Use the eye button, “Show password”, to check what you typed.
Can I open a ZIP if I've forgotten the password?
No. This tool can't find or remove passwords. Ask the person who sent the ZIP.
The file names are garbled
Use “File name encoding” above the list to pick the language of the device the ZIP was made on. For a ZIP from Japanese Windows, that's “Japanese (Shift_JIS)”. This option only appears for ZIPs where the encoding needs choosing.
What is the “__MACOSX” folder?
It holds extra information about the files that a Mac puts into its ZIPs. It duplicates the other files and isn't used outside a Mac, so this tool doesn't list it.
Can I save all the files at once?
Yes. With “Save all”, Chrome and Edge on a computer let you pick a folder and save everything with the ZIP's folders kept. On iPhone you can save them all from the share screen with “Save to Files”; other browsers download the files one after another.
How large a ZIP can it open?
There's no set limit. The list of files appears right away, but extracting uses your device's memory, so files of several GB may not extract on a phone.
Can I make ZIPs too?
With “Make a ZIP (compress)” you can pack files and folders into one ZIP, with a password if you like.
Is it free?
Yes. No sign-up, no installation, and no ads.
