Good to know before you start
- Estimated pay is just hourly rate × hours worked. Overtime, night and holiday premiums, taxes and social insurance are not included.
- Times can be entered down to the minute. To see results in seconds, use “Convert”.
- Some workplaces round time to units such as 15 minutes. In that case, enter the rounded times.
How time is calculated
Time carries over at 60, so adding it like ordinary decimals gives the wrong answer. For example, 1 h 50 min + 1 h 20 min gives 70 minutes, and carrying 60 minutes over to an hour makes 3 h 10 min. This tool converts every time to seconds first, calculates, and then turns the result back into hours:minutes.
For pay and billable hours, hours:minutes are turned into decimal hours: hours + minutes ÷ 60. So 8 h 30 min is 8.5 hours, and 7 h 45 min is 7.75 hours. A common mistake is writing “8 h 30 min = 8.3 hours”, so check the result before you copy it.
FAQ
Answers to the things people most often wonder about when calculating time.
Are the times I enter sent anywhere?
No. All calculations happen in the browser on your device. The times you enter are saved only in this browser, so they’re there the next time you open the tool.
Can it calculate night shifts that run past midnight?
Yes. If the end time is earlier than the start (like 22:00 → 6:00), it counts as ending the next day, and that day is marked “Next day”.
How are totals over 24 hours shown?
In “Work hours”, the total stays in hours, like “38:30”. In “Sum”, when the total goes over 24 hours, it’s also shown in days, like “1 d + 2:30”.
What are decimal hours?
Hours:minutes written as a decimal, with one hour as 1. 8 h 30 min is 8.5, and 7 h 45 min is 7.75. They’re used for hourly rate × hours and for entering time in spreadsheets.
Is the break entered in minutes rather than hours:minutes?
Yes. Enter the time you took off in “Break (min)” in minutes: 60 for one hour, 90 for an hour and a half.
What time formats can I enter?
Besides “9:30”, you can enter “930”, “0930”, “9.30”, “9h30”, or 12-hour times like “9:30pm” or “9:30 am”. With digits only, 1–2 digits are read as the hour, and with 3–4 digits the last two are the minutes. When you leave the box, the time is tidied to the 24-hour “21:30” form.
Does the estimated pay include overtime or night premiums?
No. It’s only hourly rate × hours worked, rounded to 2 decimal places. For hours paid at a higher rate, calculate them separately with that rate.
How do I subtract time?
In “Sum”, click “− Subtract” on the row you want to take away. If the total is negative, it’s shown like “-1:30”.
Will my times still be there next time I open it?
What you enter in “Work hours” and “Sum” stays in this browser, so you can fill in a week or a month bit by bit. To erase it, click “Clear all”.
Is it free?
Yes. No sign-up, and no ads.
