Good to know before you start
- The age is counted in completed years. Some countries or documents use other rules, so check what yours asks for.
- The Chinese zodiac sign here changes on January 1, not at Lunar New Year, so it can differ for people born in January or February.
- Only dates from 1900 up to 50 years from now can be chosen.
How age is counted
Age in completed years starts at 0 on the day you are born and goes up by one on each birthday. It is the age used on forms, IDs and in everyday life. This tool also shows the exact age in years, months and days, and the total number of days lived, counting the date of birth as day 0.
People born on February 29 only have a birthday every four years. In other years, this tool counts them one year older on March 1. The age chart lists each birth year with the age before and after that year’s birthday, and its Chinese zodiac sign, which here changes on January 1 rather than at Lunar New Year.
Frequently asked questions

Is my date of birth sent anywhere?
No. Everything is calculated in your browser on this device. Your date of birth is never sent to a server or stored on your device.
How is the age counted?
In completed years: you are 0 on the day you are born, and your age goes up by one on each birthday. This is the age used on most forms and IDs.
How do you handle a birthday on February 29?
In years that are not leap years, the age goes up by one on March 1. Some countries use February 28 instead for legal purposes, so check the rule if it matters for a document.
Can I find the age on a past or future date?
Yes. Change the date under “Age on” to see the age on that day. You can choose any date from 1900 up to 50 years from now.
How are the days until the next birthday counted?
From the “Age on” date to the next birthday. On the birthday itself, it shows 0 days and the age turned that day.
How are the days lived counted?
The number of days from the date of birth to the “Age on” date. The day you were born counts as day 0.
What does the age chart show?
For each birth year, how old people are in the chosen year: “After birthday” once their birthday has passed, and “Before birthday” until then. The row for your birth year is highlighted.
When does the Chinese zodiac sign change?
Here, it changes on January 1. In the traditional reckoning it changes at Lunar New Year (late January to mid-February), so people born in January or February may have the previous year’s sign.
What do the copied results look like?
The copy button next to a result copies just the number (like “36”). “Copy all results” copies one line per result, like “Age: 36 years”.
